Writing Your Own Letter of Recommendation:  An Offer you Can’t Refuse

Every year applicants ask me if it’s okay to write their own letters of recommendation when the offer is made by a faculty member. It’s not unethical to write your own letter if you’re asked to do so. If you’d like to explore the scruples of this issue, take a look at this classic New York Times Ethicist column about the topic.

The mistake I see candidates make in this situation is that applicants don’t write very strong letters for themselves, likely because they feel awkward about showcasing their accomplishments fully. If you have the opportunity to write your own letter, craft a glowing one. Be effusive and full-throated in your remarks about yourself! Remember that the letter-writer can choose to tone down the recommendation if s/he doesn’t agree. But if s/he does, you’ve utilized an opportunity fully and bolstered your candidacy tremendously.

Will Scientific Research Cuts Lead to Increased Medical School Applications?

The AAMC recently posted a piece by Bridget Balch about how rescinded offers and smaller PhD cohorts might have long-term consequences for biomedical science. In addition to withdrawn offers, for some PhD applicants, the research funding chaos has led to increased rejection rates and delayed decisions regarding admissions. Programming for science graduate students from underrepresented minorities has also been hit.

I just heard about an acquaintance’s son who will be changing his plans from getting a PhD to applying to medical school, as he sees being a doctor as a more secure career path. I wonder if an unintended consequence of the cuts in scientific research will mean an increased number of students applying to medical school in the next few cycles. Only time will tell.

More Medical Students, Fewer Applicants, and a 3.86 (!) GPA Mean

The AAMC published information recently demonstrating several trends about last year’s cycle:

1) The number of medical students has expanded because of new medical schools. First-year matriculants increased 0.8% from the previous academic year to 23,048.

2) On the other hand, the number of applicants decreased for the third year in a row. There was a 1.2% decline versus 4.7% the previous year and 11.6% two years ago. Remember, though, that there had been a huge increase in numbers during the height of the COVID pandemic.

3) Underrepresented minority group matriculant numbers generally declined.

4) What impressed me was that the current incoming class had a mean GPA of 3.86. Wow!

Consider Ten Ways to Improve your Medical School Application

New Year’s resolutions are notoriously hard to realize. But there are smart tips for executing them, including making sure goals are specific and truly achievable within a reasonable time frame. That’s why starting early on your medical school candidacy is important. The beginning of the year is a great time for pre-meds to redouble their efforts toward their academic and professional goals. 

As always, I recommend a very focused approach that allows you to do more of what you want and less of what you don’t. Think research will help your candidacy but don’t like being in the lab? Consider public health or clinical investigations. Think volunteerism will bolster your application but don’t like being one of a crowd in a group project? Select a setting that allows you to work independently: Several of my clients have chosen to volunteer on a crisis line – from home.

There are definitely necessary elements to any robust medical school candidacy (clinical experience, strong grades, a reasonable MCAT score), but being a pre-med can also be fun, mind-broadening, and career-affirming.

How Might the Supreme Court Decision about Affirmative Action Affect Medical School Admissions

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently sponsored an interesting webinar on how the Supreme Court affirmative action decision might influence medical schools. Invited faculty included representatives from the AMA, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Association of American Medical Colleges, University of California (UC) Davis Medical School, and Meharry Medical School. I recommend listening to the recording or reading the transcript. (You can get CME credit for doing so, as a bonus.) 

There are a few points I found particularly interesting: 

  1. An African American physician has a likelihood of seeing African American patients at a rate that is approximately 23 to 24 times that of a white physician.
  2. Among first-year medical students, 62-63% of African American pupils say that serving an underserved population is what they want to do when they finish their education, whereas white and Asian students are in the twentieth percentiles in reporting that they want to serve those same populations.
  3. UC Davis Medical School is employing multiple, creative techniques to improve diversity at their institution, including implicit bias mitigation training and the implementation of a medical school track called Avenue M – focused on applicants who went to community colleges. Consequently, at UC Davis, over 50% of students coming from disadvantaged or underrepresented-in-medicine backgrounds make up their classes.
